If you wish to request changes to / share feedback about this site - please complete this form.
At Cuidiú Cork, we have several Spectra S1 & S2 Pumps available for loan.
To borrow a pump, please speak with an active, qualified Breastfeeding Counsellor (BFC). If they feel a pump would be helpful for you, they will send a link to our Tito booking system, where you can place your order.
While the loan itself is free, you will need to purchase at least one personal kit (€20). This kit is for your own use and cannot be shared with other parents.
There is no fixed loan period - your BFC will assess your needs and recommend how long they feel you may need the pump for.
When you’ve finished using the pump, please contact your BFC or email cork@cuidiu.ie to arrange its return.
We’re here to support you and make your breastfeeding journey a little easier!
About the Pump - We use the Spectra S1 & S2 Plus Electric Double Pumps
Motor: The main part of the pump, the large part with the handle and button on it. There is a plug and a cable for the motor. You can also use batteries in the motor.
Kit: The kit is the pack that you pay for when borrowing the pump; it cannot be reused for another person so a new kit is needed for each mother. Below (see bottom right of page 2) is a handy guide for figuring out what size kit would suit you best.
Flange: The pump flange is the part that goes over the nipple/breast. There are a few sizes available on the market including 20mm, 22mm, 24mm and 28mm. The size is on the side of the flange. Cuidiú Breastfeeding Counsellors have sizes 20mm and 24mm available to buy at €20 per kit for a single flange and bottle. If you plan to express milk on both breasts at the same time, you will need to buy two kits.
Tubing: Attaches to the backflow protector and to the main motor.
Backflow protector: In the kit, it is a round piece with 2 prongs - one on each side.
See bottom right of Page 2 for a handy guide for sizing the kit needed.
Instructions for using the pump
Insert the tubing into the motor. (this is the main part of pump with the handle) / Insert other end of tubing into the narrow prong on the backflow protector.
Attach the larger prong on the backflow protector to the flange.
Push the valve head into the bottom of the flange.
Screw on the bottle and you are ready to pump.
Press the ON button.
When you switch on the pump it will be in expression mode.
Press the Letdown (or massage) button (has 3 waves on it) to put your pump into massage mode (you will see this 3 wave icon on the screen of the pump).
Cycle speed: the amount of times suction is applied to the breast in one minute. / You cannot change the cycle speed in Letdown (massage) mode. It will stay at 70.
You CAN adjust the SUCTION from 1 to 5 in Massage mode. Adjust to your comfort level.
Letdown mode stimulates milk release from the breast.
Stay in Letdown (Massage) mode until you see milk spraying from your breast, then press the Letdown (Massage) mode button to switch into expression mode.
Expression mode has 38 to 54 cycles per minute.
It is very helpful to relax, cover the pump/bottle.
Do not pump for more than 30 minutes.
Suction strength 1 - 12
For beginners, start with strength 2 or 3; if you need more suction, increase to 4 or 5.
You should not feel any pain.
To increase milk supply, pump for 2 to 5 minutes after the last drop.
When the milk stops flowing, you can go back into Letdown mode again to stimulate another letdown if you wish.
Gently massaging or compressing your breasts while you pump can be helpful.
To DOUBLE PUMP, you will need 2 kits. Remove the air cap on the motor, put in both tubes.
Do not pump for more than 30 minutes.
Pumping Tips
Don’t get worried if you can only get ‘small’ amounts of milk with the pump, it does not equal how much your baby is getting direct at the breast.
Pump in the morning shortly after a morning feed (your supply will be at its fullest) maybe about 30 mins after a morning feed
Things that can help with output:
Massage the breast before pumping
Apply heat to breast (warm wash cloth)
Warm the flanges
Pump at a similar time each day
Have baby near you and if not, pictures or a video of them for help with the letdown
Relaxing music, deep breaths
A sock over the bottle so you are not watching the input too much adding stress to the body
Don't forget to bring pump if going away as you will still need to pump as often as baby feeds.
Do not pump for more than 30 minutes.
Cleaning the kits
Wash in hot soapy water after every use and once in 24 hours, sterilize/rinse out with boiling water.
How much to feed baby
This is a handy website with a calculator that you can use to work out how much baby will need at each feed.
Storage Guidelines
